[Movie Review] “Jurassic World” - A Huge Leap in Dinosaur Action!

Because I had a routine medical check-up today, I took advantage of some special leave and enjoyed a four-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday. So, in the morning, I went to a cinema I’ve never been to before to watch the latest hit, “Jurassic World.”

For those hesitating whether to follow the trend: “Jurassic World” is a dinosaur movie filled with dinosaurs. If you want to go to the cinema to see dinosaurs, then you must go watch it. There are really a lot of dinosaurs inside. If you’re looking for a film with a profound plot, you might as well save your money and buy a Blu-ray of “The Shawshank Redemption” to watch at home.

The story goes like this:

Two young brothers are invited to the amusement park because their aunt works at Jurassic World. Star-Lord Raptor trainer Owen is hired to check the safety of the enclosures before a new breed of dinosaur is unveiled. However, a clever new hybrid dinosaur (Indominus Rex) finds a loophole and escapes, starting a killing spree outside the enclosure.

The amusement park quickly shuts down the rides, so the two unruly brothers, who are running around, are the first to encounter the rampaging Indominus Rex, leading everyone into a series of escape and chase sequences…

The plot of this movie is somewhat similar to the first one, and the character settings are also quite similar. Even the ending is very much like the first one. It’s basically a reboot of the first film, right? XDD

However, there are some new and interesting elements added.

Spoilers ahead

Raptor Plan

InGen hires a Marine veteran, Owen, to help train the raptors, aiming to test whether they can follow human commands and eventually use them for military purposes. However, the raptors cannot be truly controlled, and Owen opposes training them as war machines.

When the super out-of-control hybrid Indominus Rex wreaks havoc, the park management has no choice but to agree to implement the Raptor Plan, relying on the raptors’ sense of smell and ferocity to hunt down the rogue Indominus Rex. Little did they know that the scientist who created the Indominus Rex had also used raptor genes, causing the four well-trained raptors to immediately turn on humans.

The role of raptors in “Jurassic World” thus differs from the first three films. In the previous movies, raptors were the main source of tension for the protagonists, with the plots revolving around being chased by raptors. In this movie, the raptors are torn between sides, and their occasional cuteness is quite endearing XD.

In the final battle, the raptors decide to join the humans to fight against the Indominus Rex. That scene of seamless cooperation was truly amazing, and it’s probably the scene I most want to rewatch in the entire film.

Indominus Rex

This is actually the main character of the film!

The core principle of Jurassic World: audiences love bigger, fiercer, and more captivating dinosaurs. Thus, this all-powerful genetically engineered Indominus Rex was born. Dr. Wu from Jurassic World’s research center used various animal genes to create the Indominus Rex, granting it the abilities of multiple species.

Doesn’t it remind you of Deadpool from “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”?

This super-strong Indominus Rex initially tries to break the glass of its exhibit. When it fails, it creates scratch marks on the wall to make humans think it escaped. While everyone is searching for it, it sneaks out and even digs out the tracker embedded in its body, making it untraceable by humans. Its intelligence is incredibly high, and coupled with its ability to change its body color according to the environment, it seems destined to sit at the top of the food chain effortlessly.

However, I feel that this kind of hybrid dinosaur deviates from the core of Jurassic Park. If this direction continues, there might be a chance for a crossover with Godzilla one day.

(Although the final battle already had a strong Godzilla vibe)

The Final Battle

Although I mentioned it at the beginning, this scene is so cool that it deserves another mention.

After the newly allied raptors are taken down by the Indominus Rex, Claire bravely grabs a flare, lures the real T-Rex out of its enclosure, and throws the flare onto the Indominus Rex, and then…

Let them fight (lol)

It just hit me that this is exactly the plot of Godzilla XD

In this battle, since the Indominus Rex is the villain, I couldn’t help but root for the heroic T-Rex! Memories from the first film suddenly flooded back. Remember when the protagonists were cornered by raptors, and a T-Rex came to the rescue, instantly taking out two raptors? Once again, the T-Rex plays the role of the savior.

This battle was truly nerve-wracking. Although the T-Rex is indeed the strongest, it was up against a multi-gene hybrid Indominus Rex, so it was initially overpowered. It looked like it was about to be defeated.

Then, at the perfect moment, a raptor suddenly appeared and lunged at the Indominus Rex. The T-Rex seized the opportunity and together they chased the Indominus Rex to the lake, where it was finally taken down by the giant Mosasaurus jumping out of the water and dragging it under.

After this fight, the T-Rex, raptors, and the protagonists exchanged knowing smiles, appreciating each other’s heroism, and each went their separate ways toward their futures.

Although the plot of “Jurassic World” is really lacking and has many loopholes (like those unrealistic high heels), the dinosaur scenes are plentiful. Even the dinosaurs have factions and emotions, adding many interactions between humans and dinosaurs. It’s not just one-sided slaughter anymore, making it quite enjoyable to watch because there are really a lot of dinosaurs!

So, if your mindset is “I bought a ticket just to see dinosaurs,” then you really should watch this movie.
